Free time used to be tight, now it’s none existent.
Lots of changes happening. It’s getting difficult to find free time.
Some things demand priority. Then more things happens which also demand priority. Something will likely go down next week which will add more to my plate.
There is only so much that I can do. As much as I enjoy posting on this site, tons of other stuff needs my attention. Much of this was not planned – life happens and all the changes have been good things, with more on the way. The key is for me to stay on top of it all.
Because of the above, all our sites will essentially go static. No update posts will appear till May. I’m burning the candle on both ends and so far things are turning out rather well.
Hang in there. There is actually lots of stuff on this site which most folks have not yet read. More posts will come, but likely not till May.

AC/DC are forced to reschedule the 10 upcoming dates on the U.S. leg of their “Rock or Bust” World Tour. AC/DC’s lead singer, Brian Johnson, has been advised by doctors to stop touring immediately or risk total hearing loss.
Tomorrow’s show in Atlanta through Madison Square Garden in New York, NY in early April will be made up later in the year, likely with a guest vocalist. More information regarding these rescheduled shows to come. Current ticket holders can hold on to their tickets for the rescheduled dates or receive a refund at point of purchase.

New Apple OS X Ransomware discovered by “Unit 42” of Palo Alto Networks
A new Ransomware targeting Apple OS X based computers has been found and reported by Palo Alto Networks. Their Unit 42 Security Group have named this new ransomware as “KeRanger”.
Two installers of the Transmission BitTorrent ailient installer for OS X were found by Palo Alto Networks to be infected with KeRanger Ransomware.
The following is a quote from the Palo Alto Networks Reseaarch Center blog:
“Palo Alto Networks reported the ransomware issue to the Transmission Project and to Apple on March 4. Apple has since revoked the abused certificate and updated XProtect antivirus signature, and Transmission Project has removed the malicious installers from its website.

Everyone running 2.90 on OS X should immediately upgrade to and run 2.92, as they may have downloaded a malware-infected file. This new version will make sure that the “OSX.KeRanger.A” ransomware (more information available here) is correctly removed from your computer.
Users of 2.91 should also immediately upgrade to and run 2.92. Even though 2.91 was never infected, it did not automatically remove the malware-infected file.

The Department of Defense announced today that it will invite vetted hackers to test the department’s cybersecurity under a unique pilot program. The “Hack the Pentagon” initiative is the first cyber bug bounty program in the history of the federal government.
Under the pilot program, the department will use commercial sector crowdsourcing to allow qualified participants to conduct vulnerability identification and analysis on the department’s public webpages. The bug bounty program is modeled after similar competitions conducted by some of the nation’s biggest companies to improve the security and delivery of networks, products, and digital services. The pilot marks the first in a series of programs designed to test and find vulnerabilities in the department’s applications, websites, and networks.
Participants in the bug bounty will be required to register and submit to a background check prior to any involvement with the pilot program. Once vetted, these hackers will participate in a controlled, limited duration program that will allow them to identify vulnerabilities on a predetermined department system. Other networks, including the department’s critical, mission-facing systems will not be part of the bug bounty pilot program. Participants in the competition could be eligible for monetary awards and other recognition.
This innovative project is a demonstration of Secretary Carter’s continued commitment to drive the Pentagon to identify new ways to improve the department’s security measures as our interests in cyberspace evolve.
“I am always challenging our people to think outside the five-sided box that is the Pentagon,” said Secretary of Defense Ash Carter. “Inviting responsible hackers to test our cybersecurity certainly meets that test. I am confident this innovative initiative will strengthen our digital defenses and ultimately enhance our national security.”
The “Hack the Pentagon” initiative is being led by the department’s Defense Digital Service (DDS), launched by Secretary Carter last November. The DDS, an arm of the White House’s dynamic cadre of technology experts at the U.S. Digital Service, includes a small team of engineers and data experts meant to improve the department’s technological agility.
“Bringing in the best talent, technology and processes from the private sector not only helps us deliver comprehensive, more secure solutions to the DoD, but it also helps us better protect our country,” said DDS Director and technology entrepreneur Chris Lynch.
This initiative is consistent with the administration’s Cyber National Action Plan announced on Feb. 9, which prioritizes near-term actions to improve our cyber defences and codifies a long-term strategy to enhance cybersecurity across the U.S. government.
The pilot program will launch in April and the department will provide more details on requirements for participation and other ground rules in the coming weeks.

NXNE (in Toronto – June 17 & 18 2016) could look a lot different this year
Toronto’s North by Northeast (NXNE) conference and music festival is turning 22 this year. And after more than two decades spent proliferating culture in the city, it looks like it may be cooking up something new for 2016.
Today, the city’s Economic Development Committee voted in favour of helping support the annual festival as it moves forward. It also recommended that the Committee’s general manager report back on how Austin supports South by Southwest (SXSW) to see if we could emulate similar programs here. City Council will now consider this item on March 30.
Yet, this all becomes increasingly relevant because, as NOW reports in its most recent print edition, NXNE is looking to move outside of centrally located areas – such as Yonge-Dundas Square – to the Port Lands.
“This year,” reads a letter from Councillors Paula Fletcher and Josh Colle to the Economic Development Committee sent prior to today’s meeting, “The NXNE festival is proposing to transform 155 Cherry Street in the Port Lands into a festival venue to produce two days of shows on June 17 and 18, 2016 and to draw 10,000 people to the venue.”
Colle and Fletcher asked the Committee to support the festival because NXNE in the Port Lands, as they write, “will spur tourism and create jobs and is in-line with the city’s goal to show that Toronto is a leading music city in the world.”

Who is he?
Mariusz is an amazing Artist who draws eye popping “Photo Realistic” drawings of people. BTW, he was born “without arms”.
Mariusz had found his love of Art by age 6. The fact that he had been born with no arms did not stop him. He continued to follow his Dream.
The phrase in the title of this post is the theme of a Major Polish Television Show:
“It’s Your Life, just take it. It’s the Road to Happiness.”
I’ll be blunt. If a guy who has no arms is able to produce photo realistic portraits of people, then what the hell are “you” waiting for?
That also applies to me. I wish that I had followed my Dreams.

Did you purchase a USB-C charging cable from Apple in 2015?
Seems that there has been “a design issue” which has caused the failure of a limited number of Apple USB-C charge cables that were included with MacBook computers through June 2015 and or sold as a stand alone accessory cable. The affected USB-C cables fall into a specfic serial number range
Apple has setup a replacement process for eligible MacBook owners and stand alone USB-C cable purchasers to receive a new USB-C charge cable. All Apple supplied USB-C cables apparently have serial numbers. The Apple page linked to below, details how to find the serial number on the USB-C cable.

AMD Zen CPUs to arrive in 2016
When AMD launched their Athalon processors, they caught Intel sleeping. AMD Athalon CPUs were way faster than Intel CPUs, at that time.
Since then Intel has caught up and surpassed AMD in Performance and Low Power usage.
The upcoming AMD Zen CPUs will have up to 32 Cores, via two 16 Core modules. Bandwidth will be covered by using 8 channel DDR4 memory.
What has not leaked out yet is the Graphics performance. Intel has cross licensing agreements with NVidia. That has allowed Intel to vastly increase the graphics performance of their 5th and 6th generation CPU chips. AMD purchased ATI years ago. It will be interesting to see how the graphics performance will be increased in the AMD Zen CPUs.
AMD did release details on AMD’s Polaris architecture-based 14nm FinFET GPU. The new Zen CPUs are also based on 14nm FinFETs. Combine Polaris with Zen and AMD could be set to deliver jaw dropping performance. Maybe the days of AMD Athalon launch are about to be repeated.
We have had Tablets sell and die. Phones had great sales and then died. Laptops are having their surge in sales and their sales will start to die. Next up should be re-surging sales of Desktops. Leading the way could be powerful Workstations and Gaming Machines. Operating Systems have continued to bloat. Having 32 processors with Symmetrical Multithreading will help overcome that bloat.
Desktop computing is alive and well.

Ford Flexes its Muscle in the Ford Performance Zone
Ford is packing a lot of horsepower into a small space
TORONTO, ONT. (Feb. 8, 2016) — Driving innovation through performance, Ford is flexing its muscles at the 2016 Canadian International AutoShow.
With a plan to bring 12 new performance vehicles to the global market by 2020, Ford is bringing a unique collection of six of its performance vehicles to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre that is sure to get the blood flowing of any car enthusiast.
“This is a supercharged exhibit that is packing plenty of horsepower into a small space,” says Jim Hartford, Vice President of Marketing for Ford of Canada. “The Ford Performance Zone is a must-see at this year’s AutoShow.”
The highlights of the Ford Performance Zone are most certainly the cars:
The ALL NEW 2017 Ford GT (which had its Canadian reveal at the 2015 AutoShow)
2017 F150 Raptor
2016 Shelby GT350R
Focus RS
Focus ST
Fiesta ST
Complementing this incredible roster of vehicles is four Forza racing simulators, the Ford Raptors photobomb activation, two basketball nets over the AutoShow Opening/NBA All-Star Weekend and a customer lounge including charging stations for your devices.
Toronto Raptors coach Dwane Casey will also be hand to help Ford open the 2016 Canadian International AutoShow on Feb. 12.
The Ford Performance Zone can be found on the 800 level in the South Building of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

Ford’s all-new GT is an ultra-high performance supercar that serves as a technology showcase for top EcoBoost® performance, aerodynamics and lightweight carbon fibre construction. The GT is the ultimate Ford performance vehicle – a mid-engine, aerodynamic, two-door coupe. The GT is powered by Ford’s most powerful 3.5-litre EcoBoost production engine, a next-generation twin-turbo that produces more than 600 horsepower.
