New Year’s Eve celebration at Nathan Philips Square in Toronto
New Year’s Eve brings back fond memories of years past.
I fondly remember one year, when it started to snow in the later afternoon. Some friends and I planned to go to Nathan Philips Square to bring in the New Year. The temperature was just below freezing and no wind. The light blanket of snow added to the atmosphere.
Of course we all had plenty of alcohol in our bloodstream, you know for its antifreeze effect.
All of us piled onto the Toronto Subway and headed downtown. Everyone was cheerful and happy on the subway. That was quite the contrast from the normal feeling you get when folks get packed like sardines trying to get home from of day of work in the downtown core.
When we got to Bloor and Yonge, a decision was made to get off the subway and walk down Yonge St to Nathan Philips Square (Toronto’s previous City Hall).
That turned out to be the Best move that we could have made.
All the way down Yonge St people were wishing each other “Happy New Year”. Met some old friends on our treck. Also made some new ones. That night became a special memory.
The tradition of bringing in the New Year at Nathan Philips Square continues.
It all starts at 8PM on New Year’s Eve. You will be able to Ice Skate there till around 10PM. Skate rentals are available at the Square.
The concerts are scheduled to start at 10PM.
You’ll see performances by
and the indie rock band Zeus
Toronto’s new Mayor John Tory will count down to the New Year.
The evening celebration will close with an Explosive Performance from Circus Orange with fireworks.
It will be a fun way to close 2014 and usher in 2015…
